Independence day to me

June 30, 2013

Independence day is celebrated next Thursday. It is a reminder of the first time I lost a lot of weight twenty nine years ago. When I graduated high school in 1982, my dream was to join the army. After high school my first job was working at Keebler Cookie working on the line boxing up cookies and on occasion cleaned up the cooking sheets. I remember the cleaning up because I have a small scar on my hand from the power-hose coming in contact with it. While working there I ate so many cookie I had added 15 pounds to my frame in a very short time.

Then the following year, I  worked at a park during the summer cleaning up at a recreation center. Then in the fall that year I worked at the Ritz Carlton hotel as a Houseman, cleaning hallways. During these years I tried to join the Army and came close to joining until they found out I had seizures in my childhood. All of a sudden they weren't interested any longer.

Down hearted I thought my dreams of joining the military were over. Then I brainstormed while reading my test scores for all the military branches, of my cousin that was in the Air Force traveling all over the world. So I showed at the Air Force Recruiter office who told me the only thing holding me back for them was that I was thirty pounds overweight. I weighted at that time 230 pounds on my 5'11 frame.

That was October 1983. As I headed home at the subway station I emptied my pockets of the candy in my pockets. Soon afterwards, I picked up two books at the public library. One on running and one on cooking dishes with rice. I had never worked out in my life except for gym class and my short football tryout in my junior year.

During my short football tryout I hated running and exercising only like the actual football scrimmages. That all I wanted to do was play the game without the exercise part. Now I'm told in order to get my dream to join the military I need to lose weight.

A fire inside me came alive I never knew I had. So in my back yard that was almost a acre on land I walked everyday around and around. Then eventually I walked and jogged everyday. Then in short order I was running everyday, even in the rain because I had become so addicted to it.

For dinner I ate rice and soup, rice and lean fried beef, rice and chicken, rice and broccoli, rice and whatever. This and being on my feet all day at the hotel help burned tons of calories off my body and I lost the most weight I had ever done in my life. From October 1983 to March 1984, I had lost an incredible seventy pounds in six months.

March 1984 I showed up to my recruiter office to let him know I had lost the weight. The same recruiter kept asking me who I was because he didn't recognize me. The next week I was raising my right hand to pledge to protect the nation and the President of the United States. My dream came true and I joined the U.S. air force.

Now with tears in my eyes form reflecting of that great moment and achievement in my life, I know I will repeat history again but this time my motivation is to live a healthy life for the rest of my life. Step one is losing the weight and step two is maintain it forever.

At 48 years old I know nothing is impossible with God's help and a desire in your heart and a goal in front of you. Like my goal was almost three decades ago, my new goal will come true. Everyday I getting stronger, healthy, wiser, and fit. I'm never giving up and don't make excuses to fail. I just get up everyday and give it all I got.

Back then I had youth and some knowledge. Now I have so much more knowledge, resources, a track record of success and mental toughness. Today I do have responsibilities- wife, house, bills etc., aches and pains - bad back, and medical challenges too-  sleep apnea and morbid obesity . In spite of all that I still will do it and it will feel even better because this time I doing it with more mountains to climb. So the award will be even sweeter. Until next time take care and God Bless.

working out hard in real time

June 27, 2013

Getting ready to start a two hour workout. My workout on Tuesday was very intense with dancing to You Tube. I danced so hard to increase the intensity and burn more fat, I could feel sweat on the floor, in my hair, and even taste it in my mouth. I never sweated that hard before.

Tonight workout will be push ups, squats, running in place and jumping jacks. Start 8 07 pm with jumping jacks to get the blood pumping. At the 8 16 pm mark and I'm already sweating down my cheek after some squats, and jumping jacks. At 8 19 pm mark I've completed four push up not bad for a 275 pound man. My goal is doing thirty of these with every work out. Also ran in place at a fast pace.

At the 8:25 pm mark and completed five more push up for a total of nine. Did more running in place and squats. Now sweat is on my chest and stomach and pouring from my face and my body is hot. When I reach the hour mark I will break for some water and get back to business. At the 8 34 pm mark I can feel sweat now on the top of my thighs and the back of my neck and back. Just did running in place and squats.

At the 8 42 pm mark I feel a little winded from pushing so hard, but it is making me stronger and burning the fat which is good. Completed five more push ups to a total of 15, which is half way to my goal of thirty. Most of my body is covered with buckets of sweat and I have sweat in my chair as I type. At the 8 48 pm mark having trouble seeing with my glasses fogged up and sweat on them. In addition to more squats and jumping jacks, added five more push ups for a total of twenty one.

I'm taking my water break now, it's a little early but I need it. At the 8 56 pm mark, my heart is pumping hard and breathing hard. Got like 1 hour and nine minutes to go to complete two hours. So sweaty now feel like I've been caught out in a rain storm. Also I have to work out without the glasses since I'm sweating so hard.

At the 9 03 pm mark more running in place and jumping jacks. Completed five more push up and now I have a total of twenty seven of those done. that water was good and hit the spot. sweat is now burning one of my eyes. I feel like James Brown, my singing idol on the stage with all this sweat. One of his hit songs is Body Heat and I got plenty of that too.

At the 9 10 pm mark still working hard and taking more mini breaks. Not stopping at all, I'm going all the way. Getting ready to knockout some more push up and make my goal. At the 9 16 pm mark completed six more push ups for a total of thirty three. Three more than my goal of thirty a day. Did some squats too. My chest and stomach is covered with thick sweat. Can someone send me a virtual tower to dry off with, LOL.

At the 9 21 pm mark did some more squats and running in place. I have forty four minutes to go in my workout. Tomorrow I will rest and let my body recover.  At the 9 32 pm mark this 275 pound man has completed 4 more push up to a new high total of thirty seven - seven more than my goal.  In the home stretch with thirty three minutes to go. I'm nearing the last quarter of my work out.

At the 9 38 pm mark I just did some more squats and jumping jacks. Also did some wall push ups. When I first started this journey to lose a 100 pounds in January I couldn't do a single push up. So instead I did wall push ups and built my way up to doing real push up on the floor. Starting off by doing three push up on the floor in the beginning and then slowly worked my way up. There no doubt my body is stronger and fitter than it has been in decades.

At the 9 44 pm mark and I wish my work out was done already. Can't quit now got to make my goal. Since I haven't lost a good amount of weight in a while I decided to up my intensity in my workouts. I had noticed my workout had lacked the hard intensity and sweat I had been getting. Mistake, always keep the intensity because that burns the fat and causes you to lose the weight. I can't wait until my next weigh in, it will be different. twenty one minute to go, got to get it done.

At the 9 50 pm mark and I have fifteen minutes left in my work out.  Saturday work out will consist of one hour of weight training plus one hour of dancing to You Tube. I adjusted my work out with more cardio three to one to weight lifting to make a difference in my weight loss.

The clocks says 10 05 pm and that concludes my work out for the night. Covered in sweat and ready to call it a night.  I will sleep good tonight and will take tomorrow off and eat low fat meat like chicken, fish, or tuna.

Yesterday I ate Tilopia fish with hush puppies, which were real good. Tonight I ate two tuna fish sandwiches on wheat bread with low calorie water drink. For lunch today I had chips, pecans, two tangerines and a banana. Tomorrow lunch will have a new item which is slim popcorn I got from Costco. This Sunday is my wedding anniversary and normally it would be my low fat day. Since my wife wants me to make a exception, I will do that and just have two low fat days in a row to compensate for that.

I have another injury to report. Since I've started my journey I busted my little toe by getting it caught in my shoe that resulted in it doubling in size and become severely disfigured. Then my bad back went out in a major way when I was working out six days a week. Now I had a freak accident when I went to cut the grass over the weekend. In the garage I step back onto a palate and it slammed real hard in the back of my leg.

Since I  didn't put ice on it right away, the doctor said it will hurt, and cause a bad bruise for months. She right it hurts and looks bad. Putting heat on it and taking some Tylenol to manage it as the doctor said.  I neglected it by caring for my wife who needed surgery for her crohn's disease the next day.

It's been another challenging and sometime grueling workout. As they say no pain no gain. Until next time take care and God bless.

Wrong Direction

June 24, 2014

Gained  a pound in the last two weeks. Now I weight 275 pounds, going in the wrong direction. Every since I gave up running, I've stopped losing significant weight and have put on weight in some cases.

Starting tomorrow I will start back running. I will run on grass to take it easy on my bad back and not cause it to go out again. I need to add  and keep up the intensity too. I need to bring back the sweat so my body will burn the maximum fat.

Had corn on the cob, lean beef with rice, grapefruit, and Panera's bread Italian combo recently. Just bought some light popcorn and Talopia fish that I will having in the near future.

Righting the ship to weight loss success. I will have better results on my journey next time. Until then take care and God Bless.

two hour workout

June 21, 2013

Just completed a two hour workout doing weight lifting and dancing to You Tube. Did some arm curls, shoulder presses, worked the triceps muscle and chest presses.  Tomorrow will rest and not work out to let my body recover and keep my back from get spasms that causes pain.

Yesterday dinner was salmon fish and tonight I cooked a big juicy steak that was so good. In the last few days I  ate an ice cream sandwich, grapefruits, rainsin bran cereal, pecans, bananas and spaghetti. I've been drinking a lot of water and low calorie water drinks.

Tomorrow is my big weigh in to see my progress. Until next time take care and God bless.

Changed Up Exercise Routine

June 18, 2013

Changed up my exercise routine by doing different exercises on different days. One day I will do jumping jacks, push ups, squats, and running in place. Another day I will dance to You Tube. Another day I will work out with weights and dance. Still working out every other day for two hours.

Tonight making myself Spaghetti and French bread for dinner. Yesterday cooked a pork chop sandwich with cheese. For lunch I added fiber bars and increased my water intake though out the day.  Doing the weekend had take out from Crackel Barrel Shrimp Dinner with collard greens, carrots, and corn. First time I had the shrimp dinner the best shrimp I've ever had, tasted like Cajun shrimp.

Keeping it short and sweet since I got to go out again for the wife. Until next time take it easy and God Bless.

Tribute and Life Experiences

June 15, 2013

Exactly a week away from my next weigh in. Had watermelon for breakfast, this is a super food. Also had black coffee and water. Today I wanted to give a shot out and tribute to one of my first friends on the web. This man lost over 150 pounds and is a running machine. He done what I'm on my journey to do. His name is Fred Lucheuga out of Chicago, check him out http://www.fat2fitfred.com/.

Like I said earlier, in 1984 I lost 70 pounds in six month to join the Air Force. My recruiter said you have everything to join except you are overweight. I fixed that problem by running in my backyard and changing my diet to low fat meat and rice. Then after the military I stopped working out and gained more weight than before.

Since I gained the weight it was up to me to lose the weight. So last year I made up my mind I was going to do whatever it took for how long it took to lose that weight. So began my journey in January 1, 2013. Success comes down to commitment, mental toughness, and faith you can do it.

Since I began this journey I've had injuries, food temptations, stress from work, care for my wife with crohn's disease and other challenges. I was determined to take control of something in my life that I could do and it was to lose weight. I'm proud of my success thus far and still have a long way to go. Like Fred Lucheuga my plan is to lose it and keep it off for good. This is a lifestyle change I've always wanted for years.

Thankfully with hard work and dedication it is happening for me and I know it can happen for you too, who's struggled with weight. I can tell you it is never to late I'm 48 years old and not impossible. Good luck on your journey and I want to thank everyone who stops by and see my progress. Take care and God Bless.

New highs

June 12, 2013

Reached new highs in push ups yesterday from 20 to 32. Completed my second two hour work out doing push ups, jumping jacks and squats. Today my body is sore from that punishing good time and burning those calories. Pushing hard to reach my goal and get healthier at the same time.

Taking a rest today to let my body recover from all that punishment I put on it. Tomorrow will include weight lifting in my workout and then dance to You tube.

Been eating low fat turkey, roast beef, ham with cheese sandwiches on wheat bread, ordered Chinese Mongolian beef and general chicken, bought me a watermelon I'll try tonight. Messed around today and ate a bag of jelly beans, will have to work extra hard tomorrow to burn some of that off.

started my day off with 2 and half cups of cold water. I drink water at  work during my workday and drink low calorie drink mixes with my dinner. water is so great for the body and really refreshing during the hot months.

Will keep you posted on my progress and keep working hard. My previous post I posted a chart of my weight progress, so you can check that out. Until next time take good care and God Bless. Thanks for stopping by.

A Chart of My Progress

June 9, 2013

Another pound down and seventy five to go to reach my goal.  Considering all the junk food I ate during week 1 and then eating low fat for week two, it was a successful weight in. I could easily gain some weight but with hard work and cutting back on calories I was able to overcome that. Here a chart of my weight loss since January.

Looking at my weigh loss month by month shows some explosive losses and a struggle  in the last month. In January I lost two pounds, then the next three months lost a lot of weight. In February I lost seven pounds, in March eight pound loss and in April six pound loss. In those months I lost a combined twenty one pounds. Then in May I gained two pounds.

It is time for me to get back to those better months of weight loss. Will increase my exercise to two hours sessions and adjust my diet by eating less calories. I didn't start this journey to give up, so I'm pressing on.

My favorite sport, football is only eight weeks away and I can't wait. All is good. Until next time take care and God Bless.

Dancing Machine

June 5th, 2013

Started this journey weighing 297 pounds in January 2012 and have accomplished more than I had planned.  Since I had so many up and downs in the past trying to lose weight, I set my goal low so I could have some success. Orignally planned on losing twenty pounds a year in five years to meet my 100 pound goal. Lost more than that in the first three month in the journey. Sort of got the big head and faulted some and gained three pounds but my fire and focus came back and putting in the work and sacrifice again. My motivation is to never give up and to make no excuses. Glad to be back on course.

Yesterday burned 1 000 calories dancing to You tube for ninety minutes. Melting off those pounds  on my journey to lose 100 pounds. Jammed to Billy Ocean hits Caribbean Queen, When the going get tough and get outta my dreams and into my car. Then turned it up a notch to the godfather of soul, hits like ants in my pants and I need to dance, cold sweat, super bad,  and many many more.  I was sweating so hard at the twenty minute mark, was blinded by the salty water falling upon my eyes. Then after while had to take off my shirt to try and get some cool air on my steamy torso.

Eating fish and tuna all this week. Last night added a big salad and pecans for lunch. Keeping my meal mean and lean to compensate for last week sugar and overeating party. The first thing I grabbed when I came home from work was some salsa and chips. Will make tuna sandwich on wheat bread as tonight's dinner.

In three day will pull out the scale and see how I did in the past two weeks. Thanks to all the new friend that have put me in there circle.  Until next time, take care and God bless.

Back in the Game

June 2, 2012

After a one week layoff without exercise and pigging out on donuts, peanut butter and chocolate snacks, I was determine to get back on track and turn it all around. Noticed that the pain went away in my legs, but now getting short burst of painfully foot spasm that last 15 seconds like twice a day and some muscle twitching in my left arm when lifting weights some times.

I've decided for this week only, to eat low fat everyday for the entire week. Today had fish, low calorie drink, coffee, water, grapefruit and tuna fish sandwiches. Will include a grapefruit at lunch everyday.  Need to get some more fish and tuna since ate the last piece of fish and need more tuna for the full week. Will add pecans also for fiber.

Just finished my first work out with weight lifting, running in place, wall push ups, and jumping jacks. The sweat was pouring off me and my whole body was heated up. Went the distance of a full 90 minute heart pounding workout.

Making these changes to see positive results on the scale on Saturday and reboot my routine after that memorial day disaster. my motivation is I may give in but I don't dare give up. Until next time, take care of yourselves and God Bless.
